MDA Space and Hanwha Forge MOU to Explore Korea’s Military LEO Constellation

MDA Space and Hanwha Systems announced a memorandum of understanding to investigate a collaborative role in developing a Korean sovereign low-Earth orbit military satellite constellation. The two companies intend to examine how MDA’s AURORA family of software-configurable satellites might meet mission requirements for resilient communications and data services in defense operations. This initiative aligns with Seoul’s broader push to control critical space-based infrastructure and reduce reliance on third-party systems for national security. For Hanwha, the relationship offers access to a mature, software-first satellite architecture that could accelerate capability delivery; for MDA, it opens entry to a strategic East Asian defence market. Technically, the promise lies in on-orbit reprogramming, flexible payload management, and the potential to perform rapid software updates rather than hardware swaps—traits that are attractive for contested or evolving mission sets.
