China’s Anji County Enlarges A2Z drone dock network to cover 965 sq. miles

Anji County has finished the second major buildout of an autonomous drone docking system, adding 19 new elevated stations and bringing the network to 34 locations that collectively span roughly 965 square miles. The program began as a small trial focused on waterway oversight and scale-tested drone patrols that covered contiguous stretches of river and canal; the pilot demonstrated a large reduction in the time required for routine inspections. Officials expanded capability beyond environmental monitoring to support road inspections and thermal search operations, equipping aircraft with higher-resolution and infrared sensors for automated detection tasks. The docking platforms are designed for elevated siting so charging and payload handling occur above tree lines and public paths, and construction crews were able to install multiple units per day during the push to complete Phase 2. Engineers placed AI-enabled processing on the aircraft and used cloud comparison tools to flag anomalies—such as unusual vegetation or surface damage—and to create geo-tagged alerts for follow-up by field teams. To optimize budget efficiency, four local government departments now operate from the same physical network, sharing capital and recurring costs while enabling a broader set of mission profiles. During low-demand windows the county permits commercial use: cargo-configured drones now perform last-mile food deliveries to resort properties by lowering packages on a winch from the elevated platforms, keeping ground handling simple and reducing propeller risks. The program’s shift from intermittent ground patrols to routine autonomous sorties transformed inspection tempo; what once required multiple days can now be completed in a small fraction of that time. The rollout also broadened stakeholder buy-in as utility and public-safety units adopted the shared infrastructure model, increasing utilization and easing justification for continued investment. While the project demonstrates clear operational gains and local economic spin-offs, it raises questions about long-term maintenance, airspace coordination, and data governance as AI systems produce more automated alerts. Technical choices—elevated docks, onboard inference, and interoperable fleets—enable persistent, multi-domain missions but will require standardized procedures if other counties seek to replicate the approach. Overall, Anji’s program represents a practical example of how distributed docking and on-drone analytics can compress inspection timelines, diversify revenue streams, and create a platform for scaled unmanned operations across mixed-use territory.
