UK research funding body pauses new grants as wide reprioritisation begins

Decision-making criteria for selecting which projects or firms receive concentrated support have not been disclosed, leaving researchers and entrepreneurs uncertain about how to compete under the new regime. The pause in grant issuing and the mandate to “do fewer things” transfers selection pressure from a broad portfolio approach to a concentrated bets model, which favours later-stage, commercialisable outcomes and could curtail high-risk basic research.
