Uber and Baidu to introduce driverless ride-hailing across Dubai

Uber and Baidu are set to bring app-integrated driverless ride-hailing to Dubai, enabling customers in targeted Jumeirah neighbourhoods to book Baidu’s autonomous vehicles through the Uber platform. Riders will be able to select a dedicated autonomous option or be matched with Baidu’s robotaxis when requesting standard UberX and Comfort trips. The initial deployment is limited geographically and will expand only after operational metrics are met and municipal approvals are secured. Technically, the effort will require high-precision mapping, local sensor calibration and integration of Baidu’s autonomy stack with Uber’s dispatch, payment and rider-matching systems. The Dubai roll-out comes as Uber moves from limited demonstrations to continuous, customer-facing AV operations in multiple international markets, reflecting a broader commercial strategy that relies on multiple autonomy suppliers and staged, corridor-based launches. That supplier strategy is designed to reduce up-front integration friction and share deployment risk through milestone-linked commercial arrangements, allowing Uber to scale varied AV hardware and software across different city types. Short-term financial and operational transparency — including how AV-related capital is disclosed and how partner tranche payments are managed — will be important for investor confidence as deployment progresses. Key operational risks include edge-case handling, adverse weather, curb and signage variability, insurance and public trust after any incident; rigorous safety and fault‑handling protocols will be central to regulator and public acceptance.
