Partnerships matter: Rubin Observatory’s future data stream is central to B612’s strategy, because its volume and depth will vastly increase discovery rates and create acute demand for robust pipelines. B612 emphasizes transparent tools to ensure independent verification of threat assessments and to reduce single-source authority in a fast-moving information environment. The group also frames the effort as dual-use: mapping the small-body population supports both planetary defense and future mission planning or resource exploration. Operationally, the organization relies on commercial cloud services to scale analysis and on open-source releases so that governments, universities and private teams can validate results. Public outreach remains part of the mission through initiatives such as Asteroid Day, which the foundation uses to build trust and preparedness ahead of notable events like the 2029 Apophis flyby. The nonprofit’s leaders argue that the problem is primarily one of data and tooling rather than a lack of concepts for mitigation; they want to shorten the latency between discovery and actionable assessment. Technical and non-technical dimensions intersect: algorithms and infrastructure matter, but so do communications, governance and decision-making frameworks if a real threat emerges. In effect, B612 is positioning itself as an operationally minded intermediary—an intelligence and software layer—that amplifies limited observational resources and distributes analytic capacity worldwide.
