Xiaomi's EV Push Gains Momentum After Rapid Early Sales; Sets 550,000-Unit Goal for 2026

Xiaomi’s vehicle program has reached a scale that invites industry attention. The company reports cumulative deliveries approaching 600,000 units since volume production began roughly 22 months ago, with more than 410,000 deliveries in 2025 alone—well ahead of its earlier internal pacing. A concentrated launch cadence has made the YU7 a top short-run seller in China, producing about 150,000 units across six months and roughly 37,869 units in a recent month, helping push Xiaomi to monthly peaks (December deliveries topped 50,000). To broaden appeal and address range-sensitive buyers, Xiaomi introduced a refreshed SU7 whose top trim touts a near-900 km range while lower trims offer roughly 720 km; the SU7 sits in a mid-to-upscale price band. Management’s disclosed 2026 target of 550,000 units signals a plan to sustain high-volume throughput while managing dealer flow, inventory, and higher-cost long-range configurations. The company’s rapid scaling is occurring against a backdrop of aggressive moves from other Chinese automakers—BYD, Geely, Leapmotor, Xpeng and multiple new entrants—creating an environment of heightened competition, export push and tightening margins for many players. Incumbents such as Tesla saw softer month-end volumes in some markets last year, illustrating how new entrants can pressure legacy shares in China and parts of Europe. Separately, industry reporting indicates exploratory discussions between Xiaomi and Ford, reflecting legacy OEM interest in partnering with consumer-electronics-led entrants to share development costs and software capabilities; those talks remain preliminary with no deal announced. The near-term operational challenge for Xiaomi will be converting strong preorder demand into consistent dealer throughput while avoiding supply disruptions and managing margin pressure from expanded long-range options. If Xiaomi sustains volumes near its stated target, it would materially alter procurement and allocation dynamics for batteries, semiconductors and contract manufacturing capacity in China and shape rivals’ pricing, product and market strategies.
